West Plains Transit Facility
West Plains, MO
The new 4,300 SF metal building includes three drive-through bus bays, as well as office and administrative support spaces. The project site was once a blighted area with a railway to the north and a major arterial road to the south; creating a long and narrow site parameter. The new facility fronts the arterial road, creating opportunity for optimal signage while still maintaining necessary vehicle turning radiuses.
The materiality of the new facility was chosen with respect to local building typologies; maintaining material simplicity and consistency amongst the city’s existing civic structures. The design solution reinterprets the city’s existing material palette in a manner that not only relates to the vernacular, but also expresses the functionality of the facility. A formal design order was developed, based on the physical design of a transit bus, and commonly used building materials were employed to express this design order throughout the project.
